Sorsby named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for second time

Per GoBearcats:

Cincinnati football redshirt sophomore quarterback Brendan Sorsby collected his second Big 12 Newcomer of the Week award on Monday following his valiant performance in the Bearcats’ 44-41 shootout loss at Texas Tech.

The Denton, Texas, native completed 31 of 45 passes for 426 yards and four touchdowns on Saturday night, setting career highs in completions, attempts, yards and touchdown passes. He added 52 yards on the ground to lead UC in rushing, too. His 478 total yards are the most by a Big 12 player this season, the most by a Bearcat since 2015 and fifth-most in school history.

His 426-yard passing performance marked the highest total by a UC quarterback since 2015, as well, and the ninth-most in Cincinnati history. It’s also the most by a Big 12 quarterback against an FBS opponent this fall.

He shook off his first interception of the season in the fourth quarter to throw for 190 yards and two touchdowns in the final frame at sold-out Jones AT&T Stadium, driving the Bearcats to the opponent’s 34-yard line for a game-tying field goal try in the game’s closing seconds.

Sorsby has proven to be one of the conference’s top quarterbacks through five games in 2024, passing for 1,481 yards and 12 touchdowns with just one interception. He is completing 66.3% of his pass attempts and his 165.6 efficiency rating leads the Big 12. His QBR of 80.6 ranks third in the conference, as well.

The 6-3, 228-pounder was also named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week following his Cincinnati debut when he passed for 383 yards and tallied four total touchdowns in a 38-20 win over Towson on Aug. 31.
