Winston waiting for SU offer

In the class of 2011 Syracuse went into Michigan for a couple prospects and in the 2012 it looks like they will be making moves in the state again. This time one of the prospects they are looking at is a 6-foot-4, 240 pound defensive end named Evan Winston.

"Syracuse is showing me a lot of interest as a matter of fact. Coming up shortly I believe that I will be getting an offer from Syracuse. Tyrone Wheatley is the recruiting coach for my area and I have talked with him on multiple occasions and he has expressed interest."

Syracuse running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley has talked with Winston about what the Orange like about his game.

"He told me that he has watched my highlight tape and he has watched me get off of the ball. He has told me that he likes the way I get after the quarterback. I think I could help them out in their pass rush game."

Coach Wheatley has been in touch with Winston a few times and the player and coach have already made a strong bond.

"Coach Wheatley is like one of the most down to earth college recruiters I've ever met in my life. His whole take on the game and he talks about how it is not just about getting into a school it is about becoming a better man overall. Football is more important, but being a better man is more important. Coach Wheatley is just a great guy and I would love to play for him at Syracuse University."

Not only does the Michigan product have a strong relationship with his recruiting coach from Syracuse he is also a big fan of the conference they play in.

"It is the Big East so you will be playing great competition all the time, Syracuse would be a great fit."

Winston will be able to see if Syracuse indeed is a great fit for him as he is scheduled to make a visit to the New York school in March.

"I am planning on going to a spring practice in March," Winston said. "I am looking forward to seeing the family atmosphere. Football is more than a game it is all about getting a family united as one and that is what I am looking forward to. I am hoping that the coaching staff resembles the characteristics of Coach Wheatley."

Other than a trip to Syracuse the defensive end prospect will also be making a few other visits.

"I think I am going to Iowa next month, Michigan for spring practice next month, Michigan State has a junior day next Sunday that I will be at, and there are a few other places I will probably be headed."

The schools looking at Winston want him as a defensive end and he spoke about what he does well on the field.

"I get after the quarterback. I have a pass rush and a motor that doesn't quit and my technique is superb coming off of the edge. On my run reads I am extremely good," Winston added. "Last season I had 94 tackles and 11 sacks; there is always room for improvement. I watch film all the time so I can always get better."

A decision will not come soon, but he does have an idea for when he wants to make a decision.

"I want to do it before the season starts in the fall, but if push comes to shove it will be before the season is over."
