Burks thrilled with visit

For many prospects, the recruiting process can come down to where the player feels most comfortable.

Huntington Beach (Calif.) defensive end Charles Burks already felt at home at USC, having committed to the school in October. But Burks' recent visit to the school helped validate what he already knew.

"I was interested in meeting with professors and learning about the academic side as well as the athletic side," Burks said. "I also liked hanging out with the entire coaching staff. I built a pretty good relationship with Coach [Ed] Orgeron because he's my recruiter, but it was cool to be around Coach [Lane] Kiffin and the other coaches and get a feel for what it's going to be like being around them for four years."

With his decision already made, Burks has taken the time to get to know some of his fellow recruits. He is close with Santa Ana (Calif.) wide receiver Victor Blackwell and several other players committed to or interested in the Trojans.

"We hang out a lot at USC," Burks said of Blackwell. "It was cool being able to hang around these kids who are going to be my teammates. It's going to be a lot of fun when we go up there."

Among USC's committed players, Burks is one of the more vocal recruiters. Though he tries not to add any pressure, Burks presents a solid case for USC to the players he chats up.

"I try to find out what they're thinking about the school and what's important to them, and then tell them how that relates to USC," Burks said. "But in the end, it's their decision and they only get to make it once, so I don't try to force them into anything. But because I'm from California, I can tell them what it's like out here."

Burks may have to be flexible when it comes to his future position. But the three-star prospect said he doesn't mind where the coaching staff puts him on the field.

"They were talking to me about playing SAM linebacker and then playing defensive end on third down," Burks said. "Whatever they end up wanting to do with me is cool with me. I'm just happy to have the opportunity to play college football and be on the team."
