Three-star defensive end checks out finalists

Birmingham (John Carroll), Ala., defensive end/outside linebacker Kameron Wood felt good about his college decision before Friday.

After making one last trip to finalists Ole Miss and Mississippi State on the same day, the three-star standout is confident that the choice he has made is the right one.

Wood will announce his decision on Aug. 13 at his high school's annual preseason pep rally.

"I have it sorted out now," Wood said. "It's going to be pretty easy to go ahead. I'm pretty confident. It'll be a good Friday. I'm ready for it."

As for this past Friday, Wood arrived at Ole Miss early Friday morning and stayed until lunch. He then left for Starkville, where he stayed until early evening before heading home to Birmingham.

"It went pretty good," Wood said. "Both trips were fine. I enjoyed myself."

At Ole Miss, Wood met with his recruiting coach, co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Mike Markuson, before spending time with defensive line coach Terry Price and strength and conditioning coach Don Decker.

"Then we went to the FedEx building and learned about study halls and tutoring," Wood said. "Then we went over to the business building."

Finally, Wood met up with Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt for a chat before heading to Starkville.

Once there, Wood visited with Bulldogs offensive coordinator Mark Hudspeth and head coach Dan Mullen before sitting down to talk football with defensive coordinator Manny Diaz and co-defensive coordinator/defensive line coach Chris Wilson.

"Then we rode over to check out the dorms, met back up with Coach Hud, went to the locker room and then to the stadium field," Wood said.

Did the back-to-back visits to the Egg Bowl rivals provide clarity or bring confusion?

"It really makes it more clear," Wood said. "When I see them close together, I can compare. I know what I saw and heard at Ole Miss. Then I went to Mississippi State and I know what I saw and heard there.

"I'm still stuck on the same school. It didn't change. The only reason I went on the visit was to get a second opinion."
