Catching up with Bram Kohlhausen

Since giving his verbal commitment to the Houston Cougars in early March, 2011 quarterback Bram Kohlhausen has kept himself very busy trying to improve his skill set and make himself a more polished overall quarterback. Part of the regiment that Kohlhausen has adopted is working out with a who's who of quarterback coaching gurus.

"Yea I have been working out a whole lot up in Dallas with Don Smith and the Clarkson"s. That's basically it so far, but I am about to start up with workouts with Charlie Ward in the summer. When I am working out with these quarterback coaches we focus a lot on footwork, pocket presence and just overall becoming a more sound quarterback. I am also going to be working on getting the play speed slower by watching film, so I can understand it better. I will also plan on being in the weight room every day."

Kohlhausen and his Redskin 7 on 7 teammates participated in their first State Qualifying Tournament of the young season and went undefeated on the day wining their pool with a 3-0 mark. They officially qualified for the state tournament by beating a young Channelview team in the semi-finals and for good measure polished off a familiar foe in Houston Chavez to finish the day perfect.

Kohlhausen was thrilled to get back out on the field for the first time since the season ended.

"It's a relief to get back out on the field, he said. "We have been waiting all spring for this. We have been throwing the ball around and stuff like that and some team workouts, but this is what we have been striving for. It's good to work on getting the timing down with the new receivers that came in. This is the first weekend that they are doing 7 on 7 in the state, so I am glad we got it out of the way early. We will continue preparing the rest of the summer for the tournament in early July."

Other than 7 on 7 and personal workouts, the busy senior to be plans on working towards another big goal. This one coming in the classroom.

"I am going to be in the classroom some too over the summer," he said. I am working on graduating early in December. I'm already good with my ACT and SAT scores so all my school is pretty much straight."

As if Kohlhausen's life weren't busy enough, the early qualification for the state tournament will allow him to chase yet another goal this weekend in California of all places.

"Since we got qualified early I can go to Santa Barbara and be in the next round of the Steve Clarkson Dreammaker show," he added. "I won the regional competition that was held here in Houston and so now I get to move on to Santa Barbara and if I qualify there I get to move on to the finals in Maui."

We'll follow up with Kohlhausen after he returns from California to see how it went.
