CMU commit Montrel Robinson impressive in opener
Wide receiver commit Montrel Robinson started his season off in impressive fashion grabbing two balls for 57 yards and a touchdown in Southfield Lathrup's victory over Royal Oak 57-6. Montrel and his Southfield Lathrup team came out blazing in the first quarter with Montrel catching a nice 30 yard touchdown on their first possession of the game. Robinson followed the touchdown up with a 27 yard reception on a slant route during the next series to complete his night's stats.
Montrel also is the starting safety for Southfield Lathrup contributing 4 tackles and returning punts and kick offs. Unable to return a punt, Montrel did have a 25 yards kick off return in which he showed great vision and shiftiness to elude tacklers.
After the game Chippewa country had a chance to catch up with Montrel and talk about his future as a Chippewa.
"I'm really excited about coming to CMU next year; the coaches have all been real cool and making me feel welcome. I like the campus a lot and the facilities, I will be attending the CMU-MSU game in East Lansing as well as the Toledo game later in the year" said Montrel.
Montrel also talked about his training routine and what he plans to do in preparation for next year
"Right now I am at 6-foot 192 pounds but by next summer I want to be 205 pounds and gain a lot more strength. I am doing some independent workouts as well as the team workouts to get bigger and faster. I know when I get to school the strength and conditioning coach will get me where I need to be but I also want to be well prepared for when I arrive on campus.
Robinson and Southfield Lathrup have one of the better teams in that area and are looking to make a deep run this year. They'll have some tough match ups with Lake Orion and Clarkston but Montrel is confident in his team and looking forward to avenging a loss to Lake Orion last season.
"Lake Orion is a really good team and it will be a good measuring stick to see how much we have improved from last season. I am very much looking forward to playing them again" said Montrel.
