Tide offers emerging QB
HOMEWOOD | It's no secret the University of Alabama is looking for a quarterback for its 2012 class.
The Crimson Tide coaching staff has extended offers out to some of the top quarterbacks in the country, and it added one more to the list when Memphis quarterback William Gross picked up an Alabama offer on Thursday.
Even though the Crimson Tide just offered Gross, UA assistant coach Mike Groh has been recruiting the 6-foot-1, 170-pound dual-threat quarterback since before he came to Tuscaloosa.
"He's been recruiting since he's been at Louisville," Gross said. "He just carried our relationship over to Alabama. We just kept staying in touch with each other. He kept telling me he was going to come down. He finally made it down and finally gave me an offer."
Gross competed at the Badger Sports 7-on-7 tournament in Birmingham on Saturday. The event was scheduled to be held in Tuscaloosa but was moved to Samford University due to Wednesday's storms.
At the tournament, Gross said he now has 11 offers and listed Louisville, Memphis, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Kentucky as his top schools. He said the only reason Alabama wasn't up there was because he had just received the offer.
The emerging prospect still thinks highly of the Crimson Tide program.
"(Alabama) gets you ready for the pros. I know that," Gross said. "Nick Saban, he's doing his job and so is the coaching staff. The players are very disciplined, and that's what it's all about."
As a junior at Memphis Melrose, Gross threw for 2,333 yards with 39 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions. He also rushed for two touchdowns and said he could've done more damage on the ground but only runs when he has to.
"Right now, I try to play like Vince Young," Gross said. "I love that guy. He runs when he has to, and I'm that type of guy. I only run when I have to. If I don't, I'll sit back there and pick the defense apart."
Gross said Saban is supposed to call next week. Gross has plans to visit Tuscaloosa the first week of June. He will also be on campus later in the summer for the Crimson Tide's camp.
